ANNOUNCEMENT -- GACSO HAS JOINED WITH IEMA - THIS WEBPAGE IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING UPDATED

03 Mar 2014 15:04 | Charles Layton

News of significant improvements to GACSO has been released today.  The announcement from GACSO's Chair and its Founder is below.

Through numerous high quality outputs, we can justifiably claim to have met our original objective of increasing the profile and credibility of the CS profession. We have achieved this through our committed members offering their time and skills for the wider benefit of the CS community. In recent months however, our capacity has been particularly tested and with the increased interest in GACSO membership across the globe we have recognised it was time to find a better model or home for GACSO.

The Board have identified the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) as the best possible 'home' for GACSO and its members. There are lots of exciting reasons why this makes sense for our members.

IEMA has ambitious plans to accelerate its wider CS proposition with its own Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) network. As an organisation that already serves their 15,100 members in 90 countries from the environment & sustainability profession, IEMA has the scale and resource to take GACSO's mission for our profession to a global level and reach while also satisfying the needs expressed by many of our members for professional status.

The GACSO Board has been particularly impressed by the passion and enthusiasm that IEMA has demonstrated towards capitalising on the work of GACSO and their intention to offer a significantly enhanced proposition to our members whilst keeping the GACSO identity. They are aware that their background is focused on environmental matters but like many professional membership bodies in the CS space they also recognise that they need to broaden their scope for the CS community. GACSO can help achieve that whilst in return we benefit from their scale and expertise in running a professional body.

Board members are unanimous in their view that the IEMA option offers the best mix of preserving the identify and ‘one world’ ethos of GACSO and the strong knowledge-sharing heritage we have developed, while allowing for the most rapid evolution to a professional membership model for CS practitioners.

GACSO's membership year closes on the 31st March. The Board are proposing to close the legal entity of GACSO and 're-house' it within IEMA with effect from 1st April. IEMA and the GACSO Board will ensure a smooth transition that ensures we quickly build on our good work so far while allowing us to take advantage straight away of the benefits of being part of IEMA. The good news is that your annual membership fees will be reduced to £260.

So that we kick off the transition in the best possible shape, and to answer all and any questions you might have, IEMA is arranging a meeting for either 9th/ 10th April (to be confirmed shortly). It would be great if you could make it!

In the meantime, if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me, Alan or any of the rest of the GACSO Board. We're all really excited about the journey ahead and can't wait to discuss it with you further.

Best wishes,

Stuart Poore, GACSO Chairman & Alan Knight, GACSO Founder
